Cloudburst in Autumn

Posted in Uncategorized on November 20, 2011 by lizaustin

8 x 8 acrylic on box canvas

Rising up 3441 ft. Cloudburst Mountain is located just north of the town of Squamish B.C.   With the Squamish River to the west and the Cheakamus River to the east, Cloudburst Mountain is highest point dividing the two rivers.  Snow often lingers on this peak through the summer and is a wonderful backdrop to the fall colours as they begin to appear.

This piece was also painted for the North Vancouver Arts Council Anonymous Show.

Autumn on Mount Seymour

8x 8 acrylic on box canvas -SOLD

In the autumn before the mountain sets in for winter snows the trails on Mount Seymour are exceptionly scenic!  The small lakes are numerous and the red and gold colours reflect into the calm water.

This piece was painted for the Anonymous Art Show hosted by the North Vancouver Arts Council.

Across the Lake

8×8 acrylic on box canvas – SOLD

The sun has dropped from sight but its radiant essence lingers behind the trees shining through onto the lake and straight to the viewer.  I painted this scene from memory of a lake called Browning Lake located in Murrin Park, near Squamish.

This piece was painted for the Anonymous Show at the North Vancouver Arts Council Gallery.

Sketching in New York

Posted in Uncategorized on October 12, 2011 by lizaustin

I was fortunate to be sketching in Manhattan last week.  With the weather unseasonably warm I sat sketching in Bryant Park which adjoins the New York Public Library.  I took lots of great photos son my trip so I am pretty sure  paintings will follow shortly.

Fintry Manor

8 x 10 acrylic on canvas – sold

I painted this a few years ago when I was in Fintry, B.C. visiting friends.  On the west side of Okanagan Lake  is Fintry Manor which was built in 1911 by Captain James Dun-Waters.  He bought acreage on the lake and named the area Fintry after his home in Scotland.   Before his death Dun-Waters essentially gave Fintry Manor and all surrounding land to the Fairbridge Farm School, an English philanthropic entity that educated underpriviledged children to be productive farmers.

Creston, B.C.

8 x 10 acrylic on canvas

The town of Creston B.C. is located between the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains.  This painting was done on a cool crisp day just outside of Creston looking at the Kootenay River.

There is poetry in the view.  There is something about bringing back the actual day that I was there in mind, body and spirit and feeling the day all over again.  The warmth of the sun, the freshness in the air the wind lightly blowing against my face all come rushing back and for a moment time seems to stop.

Broken Islands sketch

8 x 10 acrylic on canvas

Hanging out in my kayak in the Broken Group of Islands this August was truely amazing, as you can see from the painting.  With perfect weather and the calm seas  the reflections of the tiny islands became the centre of my attention.  I could literally put my paddle in the water beside my boat and with a few strokes change the whole pattern of reflection!

Lifeguard’s boat

8 x 10 acrylic on canvas

I have been in and out of town all summer hiking in Yoho National Park, kayaking the Broken Group of Islands and hanging out on the Oregon Coast.  Unbelieveably beautiful weather followed us wherever we went, so I have a really good collection of photos for winter studio work!!

However, this week I sat on the beach in Deep Cove, North Vancouver and turned out this quick sketch of the yellow lifeguard’s boat.

Takakkaw Falls, Yoho

8 x 10 acrylic on canvas

Another beautiful day in Yoho National Park.  Sitting on the edge of the Yoho River I painted Takakkaw Falls.  At 254 metres this is the second highest in Canada.  Takakkaw Falls is fed from the Daly Glacier and joins the Yoho river at the base of the falls.
